1838, dolly madison moved back to washington. she owned a house on i lafayette square, a block and a half from the white house. jeepings was a member of the -- jennings was a member of the staff so like it or not, he went back to washington too. he had come of age in washington, serving on the madison domestic staff from age 10 to age 18. he had considered running away when that period of time was up, but instead, in the end, went back to montpelier. after all, that was his home too. he was not ready to never see his mother and other kin again, and he was the only eyewitness who left an account at the desk of james madison, but now, dolly madison was selling month peelier, and that separated jennings from his own wife and children. he had married an enslaved woman at a nearby plantation to month montpelier, and that meant their five chirp, as they came along, were owned by his wife's owner. they had barely been able to get together by once a week, and now, jennings was moving from virginia all together. his wife dies about the same time. now these are motherless children back in virg

great american venue so let's begin. it's dawn on inauguration day in washington, d.c.. a huge amount of people gather on the washington mall. in 2009 and was all the way from the capitol all the way to the lincoln memorial. we just lost our picture. they are there for the inauguration. people gather to watch and other places as well. in times square in the new york city and classrooms around the country in paris and iraq and afghanistan people are watching the u.s. presidential inauguration. they've all come there and there is a big crowd on the mall. i'm going to speak to you today about this great historic subject come of this institution and i am not -- i'm going to do it in the same way in which organized the book. rather the book is not chronological. it's not divided that starts off with george washington and then john adams to going to the president. instead it is divided by the various parts of the day and then i sprinkle vignettes. some of them very serious, some of them of course very traditional, and a lot of them i'm always looking for those, too. i also going to cover so

the republican party. norquist can't vote for one. memo to washington who people think there could be a deal easily, these republicans don't fear the wrath of speaker boehner like they do the whip of norquist. in two weeks' time, we'll have a dramatic tax increase. going over the cliff is the only way these norquist controlled republicans can spare the wrath of grover. which i believe having known grover for 35 years is indeed worth than the wrath of khan. so why bother to sell now? it's a pretty legitimate subsequent, can't it? now we rallied 7% from the november woes. and i believe we can keep selling off. not hard, but certainly a couple percent as more and more people recognize that we could be going over the cliff. even if this is why you shouldn't sell. pull back again. perhaps by getting the achievable goal by helping the middle class with tax breaks. remember, it isn't a cliff where you have a hard landing. more kind of a jump on to a trampoline, maybe like a deep swimming pool. there is a recovery that is almost a certainty, but it could be a vicious belly flop where you c

is mary numyer. i live in washington but met chris 26 years ago at hastings law school, two blocks from here. we were in the same section in the same study group. when we finished law school we both went to the east coast to work for large law firms. over the years we stayed in close touch. when chris was back from over seas we were frequent tennis partners and would get together for dinners and other events in washington. over the years our families became friends as well. it's been such a pleasure to come to know them and chris's many friends in washington and to watch his career unfold. we met on the first day of school. i sat down in our civil procedure class next to a person who turned out to be named chris highland. shortly thereafter chris stevens sat down next to me. the three of us went to lunch afterwards and became friends from that day forward. chris never tried to be someone special but he was someone special. when we were at hastings his charm and wit were on display from the start. in class he was very articulate and seemed as later in life always very poised and wel

being part of the problem. what's the reaction from this press conference? >> in washington the reaction was somewhat shocked by the news conference just because of the tone. it was so different from what we've been hearing from others in particular president omo bama who had called out on gun control. he's made this commission that vice president will lead that's supposed to report backy. and then wayne lapierre came forward and talked about putting armed officers in the nation. he was not aiming for the beltway crowd. that's important to remember. it will be interesting in the next few weeks and months how his comments played in other parts of the country outside the beltway. that's who he was talking to. >> he made the rounds in the morning talk shows and stood his ground despite the backlash. it would cost more than $2 billion to put security officers at every school in the country. does the timing seem odd that this is something that the n.r.a. is pushing for? >> it calls for congress to make this available immediately. congress and the president are in the middle of these

expectation is that the hard work is going to get done when lawmakers return to washington after the christmas holiday, a little bit later on this week. that's when they're going to resume negotiations in earnest. of course there had been hopes that the president and house speaker john boehner were going to get a deal done. if you looked at the beginning of last week, they were getting close to a deal it appeared but that fell apart and talks fell apart. president obama said i will accept a smaller deal as long as it doesn't allow rates for those to go up for those making $250,000 or less. over the weekend you had a few senators, including senator joe lieberman saying they believe now more than ever we may be getting closer to actually going over the fiscal cliff. that is of course hanging over the heads of a lot of americans as they enter this holiday season and also looming over this vacation the president is having. i'll give you a little sense of what president obama has been up to in hawaii. on saturday he played a round of golf with some of his closest friends and advisers and

washington. talks are on hold. no real progress in the negotiations. we will be checking in with peter barnes. investors have chosen to remain on the sidelines. first, to the markets. taking a look at where we stand. it is a holiday shortened session. trading and at 1:00 p.m. volume is like. the dow is up 44 points. the russell 2000 down four tenths of a percent. not a lot of movement. twenty-four of the 30 dow components are in the red. tech stocks, though, are the biggest drag. hewlett-packard is the worst performer on the down right now. microsoft is also, well, soft. similar story for research in motion. rim plunged 23% on concerns of its services and business. we approach the tail end of the holiday shopping season. home depot, by the way, solidly in the grain. one of the best performers on the dow this year. walmart just barely on the upside. costco slightly down. that gets you up to speed on the market and some of the stocks making moves. let's get right to the floor show. let's begin with ben willis. here we are, just in no wait and see mode as nothing, nothing is coming out of

appears the lights are out in washington d.c. the president is in hawaii. everyone is home. with all the sides saying that they expect to go over the cliff, it looks pretty likely that that might just happen. >> well, i certainly think that concern is growing. that that's a real possibility at this point. at the same time, thomas, i think there's still so much pressure on all sides so get something done because as he heard joe lieberman said, the consequences would be huge. the economy could potentially slip back into recession. the white house has described this as a working vacation for president obama, but the reality is that negotiations are largely deadlocked on all sides. there have been a few talks going on at the staff level, but the real bulk of this work is going to get done when lawmakers return to washington later this week after the christmas holiday and resume manageses. that's when we're going to see the focus really shift away from the house and on to the senate. of course, speaker boehner tried to get his plan b, alternative bill through the house. republicans reject

feel you are reading over the shoulder of george washington or paul revere. now, the process for putting this book together was quite a journey for me. i started out as an easiest, then became a collector and then became an educator to her website called raglan in.com and ultimately through this book. the story how i first discovered historic newspapers have been about five years ago. at least when i took her first family vacation to illinois, a cozy mississippi river town, were on the main strip every discovered they were bookshop and in that rare book shop i found this nondescript container full of old newspapers, picked one up and started reading it and it april 21st 1865 near times. i was reading abraham lincoln assess the nation every word for the capture of his conspirators. that moment triggered in me an intense passion and enthusiasm for history that i previously had never had. so for the next five years, it became this journey of meticulous collecting a newspapers because i'm tucked away in the midwest. i don't have convenient access to a lot of the wonderful archives on
